Dr. Woo Talks Defying Conventional Asian American Expectations in New Docuseries
‘Defy Definition’ shines a light on Asian entrepreneurs in support of the AAPI community.

In light of AAPI Heritage Month, the Asian/Pacific American Chamber of Commerce (National ACE) has joined forces with House of Suntory brand to produce a docuseries that spotlights Asian-American talents who have exceeded conventional expectations to redefine their own Asian-American narratives.
The docuseries came into fruition after the National ACE conducted a survey which found that 66 percent of AAPI small business owners remain optimistic for the future. Inspired by this AAPI Heritage Month, the organization hopes to shift the narrative from hate to hope by sharing inspiring stories of Asian-American entrepreneurs in the community.
Los-Angeles based and famed single-needle tattoo artist Dr. Woo joins the docuseries and opens up about his heritage and his success in the two-part documentary. Woo talks about perfecting his craft as an artist but most importantly touches on defying conventional expectations and redefining his own Asian-American identity and narrative. With an immense global following, Woo hopes his message resonates with Asians worldwide. He leaves audiences with the thought, “As an artist, every day I work with people to help them tell their stories. As an Asian American, I’ve learned that sharing personal stories can have an undeniable impact on our community. While it’s so important that everyone supports our fundraiser, I also want to encourage people to speak out and share their own stories.”
Alongside Dr. Woo, Candice Kumai, a classically trained chef and six-time best-selling author, joins the docuseries, discussing her experience as an Asian-American entrepreneur. Check out both Dr. Woo and Candice Kumai in conversation below.
