It’s almost time to slam now. Warner Bros. has finally debuted the trailer for its eagerly-awaited Space Jam: A New Legacy, granting fans a first official look at the stars in action. The brief two-minute clip explores the plot overview and, most notably, showcases LeBron James and his Tune Squad teammates up against the all-new Goon Squad, replacing the original film’s Monstars.

Hype has been building for about a half-decade now, as Warner calculatedly trickled out news about the arrival of new stars, costumes and posters between 2016 and the film’s adjusted summer 2021 release. Don Cheadle, Khris Davis and Sonequa Martin-Green join James as live action stars, with polymath voice actor Eric Bauza wearing various hats and young actor Cedric Joe as James’ in-movie son, Dom, who’s central to the new film’s plot.

The brief trailer sees James and Dom sucked into a digital realm by Cheadle’s villainous A.I., who demands that James best him in basketball to free both Dom and himself. What follows will likely be familiar for those who fondly recall the original, as James trains with the Tune Squad to prepare for the big showdown. A couple curveballs are to be expected — including the transition from 3D to 2D and back to 3D — and, unlike the original’s Looney Tunes-centric cast, expect Space Jam: A New Legacy to emploly countless Warner cameos: the trailer alone previews King Kong, Gandalf, the Iron Giant, Yogi Bear and plenty of other familiar faces.

If they haven’t already, American viewers should mark their calendars for July 16, when Space Jam: A New Legacy hits theaters and HBO Max.

James, who solicited fan ideas for an accompanying Space Jam video game back in December, was recently taken off the basketball courts “indefinitely” after suffering an extreme ankle sprain.
