Kim Jones and Converse Debut Chuck 70 Capsule Collection
Serving protective Chucks in black or “Natural Ivory” alongside a range of unisex clothes.
Kim Jones follows on from his recently-released Nike Air Max 95 collaboration with a comprehensive capsule collection designed in association with Converse, introducing his take on the Chuck 70 alongside unisex clothing.
First comes the Chuck 70, which reflects on Converse’s DNA and heritage while preserving it at the same time. Speaking on this, Jones said, “The design approach for the shoe was very straightforward — taking a very classic shoe and then almost encasing it in something to protect it.”
Indeed, the Chucks see their archetypal canvas upper’s encased in a translucent rubber housing, acting as a cage over a large portion of the mid-panel and towards the heel and eyestays. At the heel, we see the classic Converse webbing stripe enlarged and presented in the same rubber that forms the sole unit, something that has also been beefed up by Jones.
For the midsole, you’ll see that the sidewalls have been extended to create a border around the shoe, elevating in the middle before working its way up the heel to create a heel cup at the rear. Served in black or “Natural Ivory,” the pairs are finished with Kim Jones branding on the tongue, Converse All Star roundels on the medial mid-panel, and an interesting take on a split (or perhaps indented) outsole finished in brown gum.
As for the clothing capsule, Jones combines notions of classic Americana, streetwear, and sportswear before mashing together under a contemporary lens. The result includes T-shirts, jackets, crewnecks, and a standout pair of popper button-equipped cargo pants.
