CG Anime Film 'Lupin III THE FIRST' Set for U.S. Screening
Late creator Monkey Punch expressed excitement for the movie.
Lupin III THE FIRST, the most recent title from Monkey Punch’s catalog, will soon be brought to audiences in America. The film is the first 3D CG feature-length within the Lupin III franchise.
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film follows Lupin III, a savvy thief who returns for an “action-packed continent-spanning adventure” in a race to acquire the mysterious Bresson Diary. Lupin III and his associates must get to the diary before it falls into the hands of “a dark cabal that will stop at nothing to resurrect the Third Reich.” Manga artist Monkey Punch, Lupin III creator, died in April 2019 but left a message in the previous year showing enthusiasm for the release of the film. Lupin III THE FIRST premiered in Japan on December 6 and earned approximately $2.82 million USD within the first three days. GKIDS, TMS Entertainment and Fathom Events have taken on the movie’s overseas distribution.
An English-dubbed Lupin III THE FIRST will be hitting theaters in the U.S. on October 18, followed by the original version (with English subtitles) on October 21.
