KOZABURO's SS21 Collection Is Informed by the Japanese Concept of en-yu

Taking part in this year’s altered New York Fashion Week, designer Kozaburo Akasaka presented the Spring/Summer 2021 collection from his label, KOZABURO. Adapting to the times, the presentation was hosted on CFDA‘s Runway360 platform and featured a 360-degree tour of Kozaburo’s Brooklyn studio and both 2D and 3D visual explorations of his latest work.

Simply titled “WA,” the SS21 range is inspired by the designer’s shifted personal perspectives due to the ongoing global pandemic. The movement of his lifestyles and spiritual philosophies was first informed by the Japanese concept of en-yu. The concept refers to the state in which we exist as individuals, but in distinct with one another. Comfort serves a primary focus, exemplified in a pajama-style set marked by a swirling “galactic camo print and simple uniforming with Tyvek pants and a matching blazer detailed by magnetic button elements. The season sees an interest in durable functional synthetic materials to challenge perceptions of sustainability. But signature craftsmanship is carried over in the form of hand-twisted shibori shirts and 3D bootcut jeans with laser treatments.
