KOZABURO Revives Rare 1950s Bandana Art for SS27
Derived from an uncut sheet in the designer’s personal archive, a new cosmic Indian bandana print animates summer-ready Camp Collar shirts and unisex skirt pants.
Summary
KOZABURO marks 10 years with an SS27 collection inspired by mid-century blues, Ganges River memories, and living fabrics that age over time.
Archival 1950s cosmic bandana prints, washed terrycloth fleece and sumi ink-dyed linen-cotton elevate relaxed silhouettes.
10-year washed denim debuts on the 1960s-inspired Rockaway Jacket, while unstructured suiting introduces fluid Balloon and Skirt Pants.
Nostalgia isn’t just a theme for Kozaburo Akasaka — it’s the engine driving his brand toward its 10-year milestone. Presented at New York Fashion Week, the KOZABURO Spring/Summer 2027 collection, titled “ Beat,” channels the quiet weight of memory, tracing a line from an adolescent voyage to the Ganges River back to long nights sifting through vintage shop racks. Anchored by the raw, soul-stirring heritage of mid-century American blues, the lineup discards rigid structures in favor of fluid, living garments. Cool grays, icy blues and sumi ink dyes set a contemplative tone, specifically engineered to fade, shift, and record the wearer’s journey over time.
Americana roots run deep throughout the collection, pulling directly from Akasaka’s personal closet to build a dialogue between past and present. The centerpiece is a cosmic, Indian-crafted bandana print derived from a rare 1950s uncut sheet, sweeping across airy Camp Collar shirts, Koikuchi tops, and unisex Skirt Pants built for summer ease. Athletic nostalgia also gets a thoughtful overhaul through 1940s-style terrycloth fleece. Retro details take center stage, from “afterhood” sweatshirts with post-applied hoods to cardigans fitted with split “boxer” pockets, seamlessly paired with flowy Jax sweatshorts.
Denim, long the spine of the KOZABURO identity, undergoes a dramatic aging process for SS27 while spotlighting a special collaborative element. Moving away from the dense, unyielding raw textiles of recent seasons, the fabric arrives heavily washed down to mimic ten solid years of wear, softening rigid indigo and charcoal into sun-faded baby blues and muted grays. Archival workwear makes a bold return via the debut Rockaway Jacket — a boxy homage to 1960s utility gear featuring period-accurate small o-ring zippers — complemented by the relaxed cut of the new Short Dexter Pants.
Furthering this exploration of denim craftsmanship, the presentation featured new upcycled pieces created under the PRM by Kozaburo umbrella, reworked directly from EVISU‘s unreleased SS27 lineup. Bringing together a shared history of denim heritage and the brand’s core New York–Japan connection, the Evisu collaboration delivered new construction techniques across custom PRM caps, reconstructed tees, and a range of one-of-one jeans and outerwear styles.
Rounding out the presentation is an ambitious reinterpretation of tailoring that completely rejects stiff formality. Utilizing a crisp, highly drapable linen-cotton blend dyed in sumi black and rich indigo, the brand introduces suits designed to reveal subtle pinstripes only after continuous wear. Modified Sack Jackets and tailored Track Jackets challenge traditional suit proportions, balancing top-heavy volume with fluid bottoms like the tapered Balloon Pant and sweeping, androgynous Skirt Pants. It is a masterclass in modern sartorial freedom, proving that after a decade in motion, KOZABURO is still finding new ways to evolve.
