EVISU is a Japanese brand founded in 1991 in Osaka, Japan, by Hidehiko Yamane. EVISU derives its name from the Japanese god of prosperity Ebisu; the name was selected because money and fishing are among Yamane's favourite things. The brand is renowned for producing its denim wears through traditional, labor-intensive methods, and for introducing premium-quality selvedge denim & custom distressing to the Japanese market, spurring a revival of interest in vintage denim which then spread around the world. Initially EVISU’s production line created only about 14 pairs of jeans per day— that was then each caringly hand-painted with the now famous seagull logo. The brand was initially a labor of love as opposed to a commercial venture, and despite its worldwide success and critical acclaim, the brand’s mission to create high quality products has remained unchanged. In March 2006, the company and Yamane were reported to Tokyo District Public Prosecutor’s Office on suspicion of tax evasion. In 2009, EVISU went through a relaunch and added Scott Morrison, co-founder of Paper Denim & Cloth and Earnest Sewn, as CEO and Creative Director to the team.
