'Game of Thrones' David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Team With Rian Johnson for Netflix's ‘The Three-Body Problem’
An upcoming adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Hugo-winning sci-fi story.

Netflix has announced an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Hugo-winning sci-fi story The Three-Body Problem, with Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss serving as showrunners alongside executive producer Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi). The Three-Body Problem will be Netflix’s latest sci-fi series arriving on the platform following the cancelation of its flagship sci-fi Original Altered Carbon. The show was initially rumored to arrive on Amazon Prime Video but has apparently been picked up by Netflix instead.
In a shared statement, Benioff and Weiss said they’re excited to spend “the next years of our lives” working on the project, alluding that the series will contain multiple seasons. The Three-Body Problem tells the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. The series also features Alexander Woo as executive producer in addition to Ram Bergman, Rosamund Pike, and Robie Uniacke.
“It’s a privilege to be adapting one of the great masterpieces of Chinese science-fiction,” Woo added. “The Three-Body Problem trilogy combines so many things I love: rich, multi-layered characters and true existential stakes – all told as an elegant and deeply human allegory. I’m thrilled to kick off my partnership with Netflix with this accomplished creative team.”
The project serves as part of Benioff and Weiss’s overall deal with Netflix to produce new original content, which they nabbed after backing out of their planned Star Wars film.
There is currently no release date for The Three-Body Problem.
