slowthai Connects With Kenny Beats for New Single "MAGIC"
A proper follow-up to Sunday’s “ENEMY” single.
slowthai took to twitch earlier today to premiere his new “MAGIC” collaboration with producer Kenny Beats. The track builds on the momentum from last week’s surprise single “ENEMY,” a direct response to his altercations at the 2020 NME Awards, which inevitably led to a slew of criticism, some Twitter apologies and inevitably, forgiveness all around. slowthai even sampled some negative comments during the show by The 1975’s Matty Healy.
After his critically-acclaimed Nothing Great About Britain released a calendar year ago, the Northampton rapper’s stock has skyrocketed — he performed Fallon with Mura Masa, collaborated with Gorillaz and found kindred spirits in both Denzel Curry and JPEGMAFIA (there’s even some hints about a supergroup forming somewhere down the road).
slowthai initially teased the collaboration with Kenny Beats in a livestream last month and delivers on his promise with a confrontational and infectious burst of energy. Kenny’s bass-heavy production gives plenty of room for the performative aspects of slowthai’s persona to ooze out — he cries in the background during ad libs and yells until his voice is nearly hoarse. “MAGIC” was released by Method Records and through a new partnership with A$AP Rocky’s AWGE imprint.
