Biannual fashion, art and culture magazine Document Journal has enlisted Virgil Abloh to create its latest cover for the Spring/Summer 2020 issue.

In his cover, which is titled “The glass is half full, always,” Abloh can be seen carrying a chair and an axe as he walks through woodlands dressed in camouflage. A receipt from Lidl is then placed on top of the photo. The cover is one of five artist collaborations that have been made in response to the coronavirus crisis, designed to reflect on the current state of affairs.

Abloh’s work features alongside covers by Judy Chicago, Christopher Wool, Mel Bochner and Edgar Heap of Birds who have each come up with their own interpretations. Editor in chief and creative director of Document Journal Nick Vogelson said in his editor’s note, “We felt it was vital to hear from some of the most significant artists working today, across a range of disciplines, on their responses to the global pandemic in the form of a series of special limited-edition covers.”

Speaking on his cover, Virgil said, “When fashion once needed fashion to make fashion images, in this time, that rationale has been reduced to necessity… This moment of time is a line drawn in the sand. The metaphors in the image are as thick as the forest in the background.”

The covers will join the previously-made editions that feature photography by the likes of Mario Sorrenti and Willy Vanderperre. All 10 covers of Document Journal Spring/Summer 2020 are available for pre-order now on Document‘s website, and are priced at $25 USD apiece.

In other news, Abloh’s label Off-White™ has been crowned the world’s “Hottest Brand” once again in the Lyst Index.
