After crafting a Aria 95 shoe inspired by Tove Jansson’s 1957 book Moominland Midwinter, Finnish footwear label Karhu returns with five new sneakers featuring the Moomin family, their close friends and Moomin’s graphic design aesthetics. The “A Proper Introduction” collection is comprised of a reimagined Albatross 82 and Legacy 96, along with three kid styles.
Featured in the collection is the Swedish-Finn illustrator and writer’s own fabric design, which was commissioned in the 1970s by Finnish textile company and Karhu collaborator, Finlayson. Dressed in a “Stellar/Cameo Blue” colorway, the Albatross 82 boasts a deep blue suede upper with a panel spotlighting a small Moomin character. For another playful upgrade, Karhu’s Legacy 96 silhouette receives a “Burton Orange/Rainy Day” treatment. The warmer-toned shoe boasts the same rainbow “Moomin” design throughout the upper, with suede overlays allowing the print to show through.
The pack was photographed by Finnish photographer Mona Salminen in the world’s only Moomin Museum. Original artwork by Jansson, as well as 3D tableaus of graphic artist Tuulikki Pietilä, were used as background designs for the shoot.
Beginning March 21, the “A Proper Introduction” collection will launch on Karhu’s website and at select retailers worldwide.
