Neon accents, reversed tags and exposed foam tongues add some modernized flair to the beloved silhouette.

With the end of 2020 right around the corner, Jordan Brand is prepping its Spring 2021 retro drops — and one of the first pairs set to release in the new year is the Air Jordan 1 “Volt Gold.” A collision of past and present, the “Volt Gold” mixes an inherently familiar base with new neon accents, marking a new chapter in the ever-expanding Rolodex of Michael Jordan‘s first signature sneaker.

Quarters and toeboxes are built from white leather, with black leather gracing the eyestays, mudguard and Swoosh. This black leather is where the “Volt Gold” supplies its first diversion from the norm: only a single line of stitching is seen on the mudguard and bottom eyestays, a detail first seen on October’s Air Jordan 1 “Lucky Green.” Eponymic volt and gold accents appear on the collar flaps and heel, respectively, and the former is rimmed with black trim and stamped with a black ball-and-wings logo.

From a distance the collar looks like it’s classic white leather, but it’s in fact made of exposed foam — much like the tongue. The tongue’s stripped-back construction isn’t its only difference from standard AJ1s: it also boasts a translucent orange tag that’s been turned around to show its liner text on the outside and move the standard Nike Air hit to the inside. Sail midsoles and black outsoles round off the look.

The Air Jordan 1 “Volt Gold” will release via Nike SNKRS and retailers like Foot Locker come January 2. Full family sizes will be available, and men’s pairs are priced at $170 USD.
