Omar Apollo Longs for Connection in New Song "Want U Around"
His new album ‘Apolonio’ releases this Friday.
Omar Apollo‘s new album Apolonio drops this Friday, October 16. It’s a full-length effort produced entirely by the Mexican-American singer-songwriter-guitarist himself with guest appearances by Kali Uchis, Mk.gee, DJ Dahi and more. Today Omar returns to premiere his new song “Want U Around,” and it’s a silky smooth electric guitar groove that showcases just how soulful his vocals can be with backing by British-Australian singer Ruel.
“‘Want U Around’ is about missing someone who doesn’t feel the same way. After you try everything and it’s still not enough, you know you should give up on that person — but something holds you back from giving up on the idea of being together one day,” Omar detailed in a recent press release.
Omar released the lovelorn single alongside a fitting visualizer of him biking down the California coastline. Apolonio is the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Friends EP and his 2018 Stereo offering. The new track builds on the funk-leaning “Stayback” single and the funk-heavy “Imagine U”. Back in September he also debuted the nostalgic and sun-soaked “Kamikaze” visualizer.
“I’ve learned a lot about that of the last couple of months, feeling what you need to feel rather than trying to suppress it. You need to like cry, you need to like feel that so you can move on. And you need to talk to people too,” Omar told HYPEBEAST in last year’s Conversations With: Omar Apollo episode.
On October 28, Omar Apollo will be performing at Prince’s Paisley Park, a fitting tribute given the Apolonio and Apollonia parallels. The livestream will feature behind-the-scenes footage of rehearsals and of the legendary estate. Tickets are currently on sale here for $15 USD. Stream “Want U Around” below.
