Awkwafina Confronts Family, Death, & Culture in Trailer for A24's 'The Farewell'

A24 has released the official trailer for its upcoming film, The Farewell. The new film, which incorporates a star-studded cast from rapper-meets-actress Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin, Zhao Shuzhen, Lu Hong, and Jiang Yongbo, tells the story of Billi’s (Awkwafina) encounter with death and family, diving deep into the narratives surrounding her Chinese-American heritage and her interaction with her extended family. When Billi, a budding and struggling artist, finds out that her grandmother Nai Nai (Shuzhen) has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, her life is thrown into further instability.
As her family discovers that their grandmother has only a short time to live, they throw together an impromptu wedding rather than directly telling her, as a way to have everyone see and reconnect with her before her imminent passing. Billi inevitably finds it troubling to live such a lie with her entire family finding it increasingly difficult to hold back their emotions and feelings for their beloved family member. Directed by Lulu Wang, the film ultimately delves deeply into a range of issues from identity, family, and more, specifically weighing in on the narrative of Billi’s conflicting identity as a Chinese-American and her cultural alienation within China.
The Farewell, which has already received an array of universal applause, will release on July 12.
