Line Messaging App Mascots Getting Own Animated Netflix Series
A non-verbal CG-animated comedy about a diverse set of friends that live in the same town.

The Line messaging app’s mascot of characters are getting their own animated series from Netflix. Line is a huge messaging platform in Japan and other parts of Asia, with Line characters such as Brown, Cony, and Sally even having their own merch and store in New York City’s Times Square.
According to a Netflix press release, the Netflix Original, called Line Friends, will be a non-verbal CG-animated comedy about a diverse set of friends that live in the same town. Aram Yacoubian, the Director of Original Animation at Netflix, said in a statement: “The band of adorable BROWN & FRIENDS characters has been a part of many fans’ daily lives since they created as stickers on Line mobile messengers, and now we’re excited to develop the expanded world for screens of all kinds to delight new audiences everywhere on Netflix.”
Although the characters have an association through the app, Line Friends has been a separate company from the platform since 2015. Although the show doesn’t have a premiere date, the streaming service is set to make some announcements sometime soon.
