Miguel Introduces 'Funeral' EP & Shares First New Single Since 2017
The GRAMMY winner is exploring darker sonic territory and themes.
Towards the middle of last month, Miguel made an appearance on G-Eazy’s Scary Nights EP, showing up alongside the Bay Area rapper and The Game on “Demons & Angels.” Now, the GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter is revealing plans for his next major studio project and serving up its lead single and title-track, “Funeral.” Notably, “Funeral” serves as its creator’s first official original offering since 2017’s War & Leisure LP.
“I’m releasing more music all the way into the new year but ‘Funeral’ is the perfect song to get it started,” Miguel shares via an official press statement, outlining the narrative and overall sonic direction of his upcoming project. “I’ve been exploring darker tones and themes for some time, this song whets the imagination for what’s to come.”
Miguel’s Funeral EP will be released in parts, with each new track providing another piece of the puzzle. This creative approach to project rollout will culminate in winter — when the final song’s arrival will signal the release of the full EP.
“I believe artists are supposed to somehow be documenting,” Miguel told us during a 2018 episode of our MIC/LINE podcast, sharing some insight into his artistic approach. “I think art, through the history of art, always documented the time, what it looks like, what the people look like, what they dress like, conversations, maybe their views on science or if maybe religion was really the pivotal pillar of society, or culturally, those things always manifested in the arts, especially visually.”
