In 1998, Mark Gonzales took to Germany’s Städtisches Museum to perform “Back Worlds Of Words,” a conceptual art piece that saw Gonzales boarding over, under and through a series of customized obstacles while wearing a fencing suit and adiStar Fencing sneakers. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the piece, adidas Skateboarding tapped Gonzales for its Showcase X event, where he recreated “Back Worlds Of Words” and debuted his new signature sneaker: the Aloha Super.
Taking cues from the adiStar silhouette that Gonzales wore during the original performance, the Aloha Super showcases a muted palette on the upper, with nubuck and leather granting the model the durability to withstand frequent skate sessions. A reinforced heel, eyestays and leather tongue further emphasize the shoe’s sturdiness, while a grippy outsole reinforces board traction. Contrasting black branding comes in the form of the Three Stripes on the side and adidas logo on the tongue, with Gonzales’s initals executed in script on the rear.
Mark Gonzales’s Aloha Super sneaker hits retailers on August 18 for $90 USD. Watch some clips of “Back Worlds Of Words” below.
Most recently, Gonzales teamed up with Jansport for collaborative graphic backpacks.
