'Sonic Mania Plus' Feature Focuses on Additional Characters
Ray and Mighty are back.
When Sonic Mania’s digital release sold over a million copies last year, it was well received by fans and Sega went on to order a physical release of the game. Entitled, Sonic Mania Plus, the updated game will introduce new features including “Encore Mode,” which will bring back classic levels for time attack, and various other multiplayer competitions for up to four players.
The most notable addition to the game is the reintroduction of Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel; two characters that first appeared in 1993’s SegaSonic the Hedgehog. In the video above, watch the Sonic Team’s creative director Kazuyaki Hoshino and Sonic Mania Plus art director Tom Fry discuss redesigning the lost characters, and how they went about creating movements that reflected the personalities of the characters.
The physical edition will cost $29.99 and is set to release on July 17, alongside a 32-page collector’s artbook, and a reversible SEGA Genesis cover. Pre-order a digital copy now for the Nintendo Switch, Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox and on Steam.
