Twitter and all of social media was on fire last night into today as J.R. Smith made what will go down in sports history as one of the most illogical and bone-headed plays ever, when he dribbled out the clock after a missed free throw during a tie NBA Finals Game 1 at the end of regulation — a game the Cleveland Cavaliers would eventually lose 124-114 in overtime. The shot of LeBron James with outstretched arms and a dumbfounded expression on his face has made its way into meme royalty and for good reason. King James scored 51 points in 48 minutes and was only two assists and two rebounds shy of a triple-double. Even the Golden State Warriors admitted they were lucky at the end of the game. Coach Steve Kerr said “we got lucky” and forward Draymond Green said “sometimes you need a little luck.”
Cleveland stays in the Bay Area for Game 2 which will be played on June 3. It remains to be seen whether or not James and company can overcome the Game 1 blunder which would’ve set the mood for the Finals in a completely different manner.
