Salehe Bembury, Versace’s head of sneaker design, has been sought-after from the likes of GREATS and YEEZY, where he had a hand in the shoe conceptualization for Season 3 and Season 4. With designs that eschew typical convention, Salehe creates emotive pieces that stand to be more than just material objects. HYPEBEAST recently caught up with Bembury to explore his essentials and chat about travel before a work trip to Milan for Versace’s Fall/Winter 2018 show.
Packing his TUMI Merge Wheeled Duffel and Backpack, Salehe’s items possess a duality of functionality and comfort. With a utilitarian mindset, each must-have’s intrinsic value fosters several aspects of Salehe’s life. Global trekking is constantly informing his creative insight in ways that impact him “on a subconscious level.” As “inspiration is constantly happening,” he packs his Strathmore Sketchbook to jot those “spontaneous design ideas.”
With repose in mind, he carries his wireless Beats headphones. According to Salehe, “Your headphones can truly create an individual environment in a crowded space. Smells and music have a great way of bringing you back.” Amongst the rigors of the world and stresses that voyage brings, his Bandulu-customized Supreme Kung Fu Jacket, Maybe Tomorrow beanie and 2 Chainz x Versace Chain Reaction sneakers illicit feelings of tranquility. For Bembury on any voyage, he always seeks to optimize comfort — “if you can take a meeting in sweatpants… do it.”
