Rare 1990 RUF BTR lll "Flat-Nose" Cabriolet Surfaces at Auction

RM Sotheby’s is set to auction a highly sought-after 1990 RUF BTR III Flat-Nose Cabriolet, an exemplary model that underscores RUF‘s status as the premier Porsche tuning firm. This particular car, one of the most extreme versions of the BTR series, is an exemplary blend of power, rarity and distinctiveness — thought to be one of only 25 examples made.
Originally delivered to RUF Canada on December 5, 1990, this BTR III Cabriolet stands out with its quadruple-black color scheme, covering the body, leather upholstery, wheel faces and cabriolet top. Adding to its unique appeal, it features the rarely-seen body configuration of a Flat-Nose with Turbo S rear air ducts.
Under the hood, the vehicle boasts a numbers-matching 3.4L flat-six RUF engine producing 408 hp, courtesy of a K27 turbocharger and Bosch DME Motronic engine management system. Period tests indicate that the BTR III can reach speeds exceeding 205 mph, marking it as one of the fastest road cars of its time. Complementing its powerful engine is a six-speed RUF-developed transaxle, ensuring smooth and precise gear shifts.
The car’s impressive specifications extend beyond its engine, including its Recaro CSE seats, Sony sound system, power windows, alarm system, 17-inch Speedline light alloy wheels, a 105-liter fuel tank, sport mirrors and a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel paired with RUF instrumentation.
With only 2,072 miles on its odometer, this rare BTR III is expected to realize as much as $500,000 USD by the auction end. Bidding on this vehicle and others included in the RM Sotheby’s Dare to Dream Collection is open now until June 1.
