Capital One's The Match Reveals New Format With More Celebrities
The Match: Superstars will feature four teams of two celebrities.
The latest edition of Capital One’s The Match, a made-for-tv golf competition that has injected a much needed element of intrigue to the sport’s offseason since it launched, is back for a 10th go. The Match began with a bang in 2018 as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson faced head-to-head the day after Thanksgiving, and the format continues to give fans an all-access view as players are mic’d up and put into a casual environment. Six years later though there’s a lot more competition in the form of LIV Golf, TGL and a whole host of YouTube golf creators. This has led to a fair amount of experimentation during the last few iterations, and the upcoming competition will again have an entirely new format.
Featuring Bill Murray, Mark Wahlberg, Charles Barkley, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Phelps, Nate Bargatze, Ken Griffey Jr. and Blake Griffin, The Match: Superstars will have more celebrities than ever and be played across two days instead of one. The opening night will group the eight golfers into four teams of two, resulting in two team matches in a scramble format. Individual play will follow on the second night with the eventual winner taking home $1 million USD. The teams will be Barkley and Griffey Jr. versus Murray and Gretzky; and Wahlberg and Phelps against Bargatze and Griffin.
Ernie Johnson and Trevor Immelman will be on the call as The Match is broadcast on TNT and Max. The competition will be staged at Breakers West Country Club in West Palm Beach from November 21-22.
