Jessica Ogden's Latest Quilts and Cushions Are Made from A.P.C. and sacai Scraps
“Round 23” of A.P.C.’s upcycled soft furnishings is inspired by staircase architecture.
Jessica Ogden is an A.P.C. mainstay, and her work comes to the forefront of things once again thanks to “Round 23” of A.P.C. Quilts, now exploring the brand’s leftover fabrics as well as sacai‘s to create upcycled soft furnishings.
In the past, A.P.C. and Ogden have used the brand’s own deadstock materials to create collections inspired by the name of Lou Reed songs, Jean Touitou’s mom’s designs in the 1970s, and others inspired by the works of Anni and Josef Albers. For “Round 23,” Ogden was “inspired by staircase architecture mixed with traditional quilt patterns and borders.”
Continuing, she says: “The staircases range from the Gio Ponti pool staircase in Sorrento to [my] childhood home spiral staircase that [my] father built. This round is also an inspired mix of surplus fabrics of sacai and A.P.C. Once the concept of staircases for the round was proposed, Chitose immediately got it, the staircases being a metaphor to travel up. The beauty of these structures is both abstracted and at times very perceptible. The mix of fabrics again shows the two companies in ‘talks’ within an object. A.P.C and sacai fabrics from many different years blended in one quilt. The quilt project is at its core a sustainable proposal from A.P.C.”
Touitou added: “Ex Nihilo creations could happen if one is a genius. Us humans, we need a starting point or two in order to create. In this story there’s a desire of doing something out of fashion — I mean not apparel — and create some automatic writing using fabrics. The other thing is to use staircases as a visual starting point that could lead to metaphors or just beauty. Or hopefully both.”
The result ranges from blankets and cushions created with patchwork effects, growing in texture and range as if a metaphorical staircase welcomes your eye to travel up and around the pieces.
