Cartier Showcases Its Newest Novelties at Watches & Wonders
Including the highly anticipated Cartier Privé collection.
Cartier has unveiled its latest assemblage of time-telling novelties at Watches & Wonders. Currently on display at the event, the Maison’s lineup includes this year’s Cartier Privé entry, alongside iconic reiterations of the Tank watches, Santos-Dumont, and a bevy of one-of-a-kind women’s wristwatches.
Cartier Privé
Every year, Cartier fans anticipate the newest timepiece to be unveiled as part of the Cartier Privé collection — a range that’s described as “the meeting place for collectors who celebrate and explore the Maison’s legendary models through watches produced in numbered limited series.” Revealed at the week-long event, the collection welcomes the Tank Normale in various treatments.
Now arriving in more modern 32.2mm x 27.8mm dimensions, the timepiece boasts a classic Roman numeral dial inside a brushed-finished rectangular case. Limited to 200 units per colorway, the yellow gold version comes with a brown alligator strap with a blue sapphire cabochon winding crown, while the platinum case edition is paired with a black alligator strap and a ruby cabochon crown. A matching bracelet in yellow gold or platinum will also be available for a limited run of 100 units per option.
Rounding out the Privé collection, Cartier also introduced 50 skeleton renditions of the Tank Normale. Offered in the same colorways and materiality, these pieces operate on the Maison’s signature skeletonized movement, accompanied by a 24-hour complication. On top of that, an extra 20-piece limited-edition diamond-set platinum skeletonized Normale has also been announced.
Tank Watches
More Tank models are unveiled at the Maison, ranging from the slim yet curvy Tank Américaine to the sophisticated Tank Louis. The Tank Américaine comes in three different sizes: a mini 28mm, a small 35.4mm size, and the large 44.4mm size. These are offered in cases made of stainless steel or rose gold, with additional diamond-embedded options. There is also a white gold mini version that comes with full-on diamonds-set case and bracelet.
As for the Tank Louis, designs vary from minimalist to glitzy and retro. The simpler-looking references are doused in plain lacquered dials in a rich green or a Bordeaux red hue. All markings are omitted, with the exceptions of a Cartier logo, a Swiss-made imprint, alongside the hour and minute hands. Each are paired with a tonal leather strap that echoes the color of its respective dials. The other two references showcase obvious ‘70s cues with grid-like motifs reminiscent of disco balls and light-up dance floors. Each piece is powered by the manual-winding 1917 MC movement, all housed in cases that measure 33.7mm in diameter.
Santos-Dumont and Santos De Cartier
Aligning with the iconic silhouette of Santos Dumont, the new model is available in a non-limited 43.5mm x 31.4mm case, as well as a limited-edition 46.6mm x 33.9mm XL size. Color-options-wise, the Santos Dumont are offered in platinum, rose gold, and yellow gold builds, paired with Roman numerals made of jasper, jade, or dumortierite. These timepieces also mark the debut of Cartier’s brand-new 9629 MC automatic skeleton movement, fitted with 18 jewels and a 43-hour power reserve.
Arriving in medium and large sizes, the latest Santos de Cartier watches feature a radiant green dial and ergonomic fit. The model’s hallmarked 8 exposed screws scatter around the bezel, accompanied by other signature features such as the railroad minute track, Roman numerals, as well the sword-like hour and minute hands. Completing the watch is a matching bracelet with exposed screw details that echo the bezel design.
Skeleton watches
Additional skeleton watches are also revealed — the drop continues with the Santos-Dumont Skeleton collection comprising three colorways in a limited production of 150. The yellow-gold version is infused with blue lacquer with a tonal alligator strap, the rose gold comes with a burgundy-hue strap, and the stainless steel with a complementing gray strap.
Elsewhere in this category, the Pasha model is presented in a 41mm rose gold case. Despite its hollowed-out skeletonized design, the piece still boasts 30 meters of waterproofness. Cartier also unveiled possibly its most complicated skeletonized time-teller for the year — in the form of a pocket watch. A far cry from the regular pocket timepiece, this modern reference measures just 35mm in diameter, while also functioning as a minuter repeater, flying tourbillon, and perpetual calendar all-in-one.
Baignoire
The Baignoire timepiece has seen an array of reiterations since its debut in 1912. For 2023, Cartier has played up its scale, function, and proportions that transpose the oval icon with a bezel design that fits and slips effortlessly onto wrists. In essence, the new Baignoire is a hybrid between a watch, a collectible, and a piece of jewelry. All versions are attired with a compact Roman-numeral dial design, and are available in rose gold, yellow gold, and diamond-pavéd builds.
Clash [Un]limited
Cartier describes the Clash [Un]limited jewelry watch as a product that combines finesses with power. An instant statement piece on the wrist, the new Clash [Un]limited women’s watch is outfitted with alternating satin and brushed-finished gold, interlinked with rose or yellow gold and shimmering pearlescent tones. One of its available options stars a diamond-paved body and monochromic embellishments, while another spotlighted variation incorporates a colorful palette of gemstones ranging from chrysoprase, black spinels, and tsavorites to coral.
La Panthére de Cartier
Rounding out Cartier’s Watches & Wonders lineup is the Maison’s iconic panther in the form of the La Panthère model. Bold, graphic, and sculptural, the watch depicts the panther closing its jaws on a black lacquered dial. Attired in a body of yellow gold, rose gold or white gold with an allover diamond pavé, its fierce gaze is brought to life with imcoporated tsavorites, while the head seamlessly connects to an integrated bracelet. With no visible hinges, these Panthére ladies’ wristwatches are designed to wrap around the wrists as closely as possible for a smooth fit.
The assortment of watches will be available via Cartier. Visit the brand’s official website for details regarding availability and price points.
