Apple Is Reportedly Planning to Use In-House Chips in iPhones by 2025

A move that would oust suppliers Qualcomm and Broadcom.

Although Apple reportedly failed to meet its goal to use in-house chips in the new iPhone SE, the company is apparently still planning to make that a reality within the next few years.

According to Bloomberg’s Apple expert Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to swap out its current Qualcomm-produced chips with its first-ever cellular modem chip “by the end of 2024 or early 2025,” citing sources familiar with the matter.

While it was already rumored that Apple wanted to swap out Qualcomm components with its own in-house parts, Gurman also reported that the company is working on developing a chip that services Bluetooth and WiFi, with the eventual plans to axe the Broadcom chip that handles those capabilities. Apple is aiming to finish that chip by sometime in 2025, according to Gurman.

Apple makes up around 20% of Broadcom’s revenue, per the report, equating to approximately $7 billion USD each year. If Apple is able to successfully develop and manufacture its own chip, it’ll be a huge blow to the supplier.
