Summary

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple staff widely use "iPhone Ultra" for the upcoming foldable smartphone.

Branding Hierarchy Debate: Analysts question the "Ultra" name, noting foldables prioritize unique form factors over raw performance specs.

Pro-Tier Hardware Advantages: Traditional Pro Max models are expected to maintain superior cameras, cooling, chassis durability and battery life.

Apple employees are reportedly using the name “iPhone Ultra” to refer to the company’s highly anticipated foldable smartphone. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the internal shorthand has been widely adopted across the tech giant’s ranks. This shift replaces the colloquial “iPhone Fold” moniker that previously circulated among external leakers. The insight surfaced on X, formerly Twitter, where Gurman noted that despite the widespread internal usage, final retail branding remains unconfirmed ahead of the device’s expected debut at an upcoming September hardware event.

The naming convention came to light during an online exchange with Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach. Weinbach expressed skepticism about the “Ultra” branding and argued that the designation contradicts established product hierarchy. Across the company’s ecosystem, from premium M-series silicon to top-tier wearables, the Ultra label historically signifies the absolute most capable version of a lineup. Because the foldable device prioritizes a unique form factor over raw performance, critics question whether it truly outclasses standard Pro configurations.

Industry observers note that the foldable smartphone will likely lack the robust feature set of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Traditional high-end models are expected to retain superior camera systems, more durable chassis designs, better thermal cooling capabilities and extended battery life. While the foldable device will feature unmatched display technology and a premium A-series processor, positioning it directly above the Pro tier presents a complex marketing challenge. As the most expensive mobile device in the brand’s history, premium pricing alone could ultimately justify the elite nomenclature.

Despite the internal consensus among employees, Apple operates with notorious secrecy. Staff members remain highly compartmentalized and are often unaware of unannounced product details unless directly involved in development. The “iPhone Ultra” terminology might simply be adopted from external rumors rather than an official internal directive. Actual retail naming is likely guarded by a select few members of the marketing team, leaving consumers waiting for the official September keynote to confirm the brand’s latest mobile trajectory.
