Maxwell Osborne is a New York Fashion Week staple, having first secured a slot on the calendar in the early 2010s at the helm of his edgy downtown imprint Public School — but his freshly-minted label anOnlyChild is one of the showcase’s freshest faces. The brand premiered in September of last year in Mount Vernon, New York, with a preview of what the revered visionary had in store for his next venture; and this season, it’s making a verified introduction. Aptly titled “Chapter 1: It’s Getting Late,” anOnlyChild’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection effectively ushers in a new era for Osborne.

On a stark grey runway, the brand acquainted itself with downtown Manhattan’s fashion mob per a mixed lineup of menswear and womenswear ensembles. Upon entry, satin wide-leg pleated trousers appeared under a gold capelette dress and preceded a black sateen Bermuda short paired with a pintuck silhouette. Following in suit, myriad eveningwear iterations, including a low emerald V-neck, a voluminous purple sateen polo and a jade green wool short-sleeve pleated blazer set, set the tone for the range’s nighttime MO.

Later, structured-sleeve and multi-stripe chiffon jackets debuted in denim, and a track jacket exuded subtle-yet-elevated notes of sportswear in silver velvet, all the while mesh worked its way into tiered skirts, short-sleeve zip-ups, sweaters and sweater tanks. Notably, the entire line was crafted out of deadstock, which will remain a pillar of the brand’s ethos going forward.

At large, the collection dispensed a shiny wardrobe appropriate for sophisticated celebrations, mirroring a deeper meaning articulated in the show’s notes: “Let’s lean into our longing. Let’s commit to this moment. Let’s celebrate everything it means for our hearts to beat; for the blood pumping in our veins…Let’s slow wine to the reason it means to be alive; for love.”
