JAY-Z Reveals His "Goal" for His Verse on DJ Khaled's "GOD DID"
His longtime collaborator Young Guru adds that Hov recorded his verse in just one take.
JAY-Z made a very brief and rare return to Twitter to reveal his “goal” for his verse on DJ Khaled‘s “GOD DID,” the title track of the producer’s latest album that also features Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, John Legend and Fridayy.
Hov’s Twitter appearance was prompted by a tweet from LeBron James, who was namedropped as one of the four billionaire Roc Nation members — in addition to JAY himself, Kanye West and Rihanna — to have visited the rapper and Beyoncé‘s home. The NBA star shared an MSNBC video detailing how the rapper addressed Nixon’s failed drug war on his “GOD DID” verse, tweeting, “Listen! Then listen again to make sure you got the point. HOV DID!!!! And so did the reporter! and adding that it was “GOAT TALK.” The rapper simply replied, ”My only goal is to make the real ‘ones’ feel seen , forgive me that’s my passion talking ….. haa.”
His verse for “GOD DID” was reportedly recorded in just one take, according to his engineer and friend Young Guru. JAY-Z’s longtime collaborator explained that despite his long-lasting relationship with the rapper, there is still an element of surprise to the artist’s work. “People think I’m still not amazed when he walk in and do these verses. And this one was different because normally, we’ll sit down, we’ll do a song, three verses, two verses or whatever, and he’ll have a verse and then we’ll figure out what’s next,” he shared. “No, he walked in and this was completely, he’s spitting the verse to me. One take. He’s literally asking me, ‘Guru, put the beat on.’ I’m like, ‘Khaled didn’t send me the beat, you didn’t send me the beat. Send me the beat.’ So then he sends me the joint and I started trying to loop it, and he was just like, ‘No, no, no, hit Khaled and get the whole instrumental,’ so he could spit the whole verse.”
GOD DID is projected to open at No. 1 on next week’s Billboard 200.
