A rare copy of the first issue of Captain America Comics has just sold for a record $3.1 million USD.

The near-mint book was sold on auction earlier this week, with its price starting at a whopping $1.8 million USD over at Heritage Auctions. Once bidding started, the book’s value jumped immediately to $2.2 million USD, and before long the copy was sold for a grand total of $3.12 million USD. As Captain America’s debut, the issue was first released back in 1940, depicting the titular superhero punching Adolf Hitler in the face. Notably, it was another year before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour, spurring the U.S. to join World War II.

“Every time I looked up during the comic art portion of the session, a new record was falling, and with the comic books, that trend continued,” said Heritage Auctions VP Barry Sandoval. “We knew this was a selection of truly exceptional material, and we’re thrilled bidders agreed with that.”

At that price, the new sale has made the comic book one of the top five most expensive comic sales in history, and only one of three comic books to ever attain a CGC grade of 9.4. It’s also only one of three comic books that have been publicly sold above the $3 million USD price point.

Elsewhere in entertainment, Viz Media has announced the English release of Death Note: Short Stories.
