Mercedes To Spend $47 Billion USD in Transition to Fully Electric Lineup by 2030
Eight new gigafactories are on the way.
Following in the footsteps of Jaguar, Bentley, Maserati, and even GM, Mercedes has now announced its plans to go fully electric by 2030.
Revealing its new direction on Thursday, the company says that it’ll offer BEV versions of all its models across every segment by 2022, and by 2025 all of its brand new architectures will be electric only. To facilitate the transition, Mercedes will be spending a staggering €40 billion EUR (approx. $47 billion USD) between 2022 and 2030 to reach its fully electric targets.
The money will allow Mercedes to build eight gigafactories in the near future in order to facilitate its growth into the EV market, and also provide the budget to release three new architectures based around electric cars: the AMG.EA for AMG enthusiasts, the MB.EA for general passenger vehicles, and the VAN.EA for service and light commercial vehicles.
“The EV shift is picking up speed — especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs. The tipping point is getting closer and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade,” said CEO Ola Källenius in a statement. “This step marks a profound reallocation of capital. By managing this faster transformation while safeguarding our profitability targets, we will ensure the enduring success of Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to our highly qualified and motivated workforce, I am convinced that we will be successful in this exciting new era.”
