Robyn Lynch Upcycles Deadstock Columbia Pieces for SS22
A nod to the Irish designer’s “unofficial uniform” growing up.
Robyn Lynch has a long-standing history with American outdoors brand Columbia. Prior to her eponymous label reworking a selection of garments in their first partnership a few years back, the brand also played a big part in Lynch’s childhood get-up, describing it as her “unofficial uniform”.
Now as a part of the brand’s NEWGEN debut at London Fashion Week, Robyn Lynch presents an amalgamation of Columbia styles reworked into signature pieces she’s been building since her Fall/Winter 2019 debut.
“I grew up wearing Columbia along with all of my friends, it was like our unofficial uniform,” she told HYPEBEAST. “It was at that age before you could really do anything or go anywhere; all of our photos from those times feature a Columbia jacket. I wanted to continue working in the form of upcycling and tackling the issue of deadstock and when I started to think of what brand to work with next Columbia was my immediate choice”.
Lynch’s initial creative process for the collection began by selecting a color palette from an array of deadstock pieces and before long it had subconsciously resulted in three color families that created a stylised Irish flag.
Through a process of unpicking each garment and combining them with new fabrics, Lynch also made a conscious effort to be sustainable. Nylons are therefore made from ocean waste, and biodegradable manmade textiles are thoughtfully put together in order to maximise the use of deadstock garments too.
Nods to Lynch’s standout chunky cable knitwear weaves throughout the collection both in the form of her staple vest with an added pocket as well as in a new, hybrid form as a detachable front on a “Rusty Orange” padded jacket silhouette from Spring/Summer 2020.
To present the collection, Lynch linked up with director Spencer Young to create the above short film, while images of the full collection can be seen above.
In other news, Aries and Umbro have liked for a 10-piece football-infused unisex capsule.
