Disney Casts Rachel Zegler as Snow White in Upcoming Live-Action Adaptation
The actress plays the lead role of Maria in Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story.’
Disney has just cast 20-year-old actress and singer Rachel Zegler as the titular character for its upcoming Snow White live-action adaptation.
Though relatively new to the scene, Zegler has already secured the leading role of Maria in Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story, and will also be making her comic book movie debut in DC‘s Shazam! sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods alongside Zachary Levi and Helen Mirren. The actress was chosen for Disney’s latest project following months of auditions, ultimately sealing the deal with footage from her work on West Side Story.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs originally released back in 1938 and marked Disney’s first venture into animation. The new live-action adaptation has also recruited Oscar-winning La La Land, The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen veterans Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for new songs and original music. Marc Webb will be directing while Marc Platt will act as producer.
“Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts,” says Webb. “Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale.”
Elsewhere in entertainment, Vin Diesel has claimed credit for Dwayne Johnson’s performance in the Fast & Furious franchise.
