Alienware has just debuted the world’s first gaming laptop models to feature the Cherry MX ultra-low-profile mechanical keyboard, bringing the new technology to the M15 and M17.

The collaboration between the two gaming and tech experts involved extensive experimentation over the course of three years, which led to a whole array of mechanical and material changes across more than 160 prototypes. Inspired by the gull-wing doors of the ultra-iconic DeLorean car, both companies hope to create and engineer a keyboard that gave gamers a fully immersive experience and ultimately designed a 3.5mm ultra-low profile design. These keys boast 1.8mm of travel and utilize a self-cleaning mechanism that’s been stress-tested for an incredible 15 million keystrokes per key. With a cross-point contact system and a two-piece keycap structure, Alienware says that the new keyboard will provide “absolute precision and wobble-free keystrokes.”

Upon experimenting with an array of material and mechanical changes across 160+ prototypes, Alienware and Cherry co-developed a 3.5mm ultra-low-profile design that incorporates stainless-steel mechanical components for an experience like no other. Inspired by the upward-opening gull-wing doors of the iconic DeLorean sports car, the goal was to engineer the keyboard to be an extension of the gamer’s senses and allow you to press deeper with more emphasis.

While neither laptop has pricing or release details just yet, we do know that upgrading to the new Cherry MX keyboard will cost an additional $150 USD. For those interested in the two new systems, definitely stay tuned for more updates to come.

Elsewhere in related news, the gaming computer giant has equipped its Aurora R12 with Intel’s latest 11th-Gen processor.
