George R. R. Martin Was Unhappy With 'Game of Thrones' Direction After Season 5

“You’re not following my template.”

The last few seasons of Game of Thrones have been some of the most controversially-rated TV episodes among any fandom, and now it appears that the story’s original author wasn’t too fond of HBO‘s direction with the series after season five as well.

According to new reports, an upcoming book titled Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers has a chapter dedicated to the creation of the epic fantasy series, and reveals like George R. R. Martin started doubting the show’s creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff after Season 5. “George loves Dan and Dave, but after season five he did start to worry about the path they were [going down] because George knows where the story goes,” the author’s representative Paul Haas reportedly said. “He started saying, ‘You’re not following my template.’ The first five seasons stuck to George’s roadmap. Then they went off George’s roadmap.”

The revelation might not have come as a surprise to many fans who follow the books themselves. During the last seasons of Game of Thrones, the show had quickly caught up to all the written material Martin had, and even now that we’re two years down the line from the finale, the last two books for A Song of Ice and Fire still remain unwritten. That said, Martin most likely already had an idea of where the story will go, and it seems Weiss and Benioff weren’t keen on following that path.

Whether fans loved or hated the ending of Game of Thrones, they can at least be happy that HBO still has more content for the franchise in the pipeline, with the show’s prequel House of the Dragon scheduled to arrive sometime in 2022.

Elsewhere in entertainment, Danny DeVito says he’d be interested in returning as the Batman villain Penguin.
