SahBabii and Joji have teamed up for the new single “Gates to the Sun,” the inaugural installment of the POLLEN x Spotify Singles series meant to serve as a companion to the streaming platform’s popular “genre-less, quality first always” playlist.

“Gates to the Sun” was recorded by the duo remotely during the ongoing coronavirus quarantines. The track is dreamy and ephemeral, fitting right into the direction that SahBabii took with his latest album Barnacles. He continues to drop some animal references from cheetahs, lions, tigers and vipers. Meanwhile Joji sings about the circular nature of love and patiently waiting in the wings with understanding.

Joji recently announced the tracklist for his upcoming sophomore album Nectar, out September 25 via 88rising, with an extended merch collection that included a jar of honey and an engraved serving spoon. He also premiered “Daylight” and “Gimme Love” while Channel Tres offered his own remix to the track.

“The song came out beautifully, and it was really enjoyable to make,” Joji said of the collaboration. “I happened to be listening to a lot of SahBabii’s stuff anyway, so when I was hit up I was very excited to work and crank out something great.”

“I used reverb on it, which is kind of in my lane, but I’ve never done a song with an artist like Joji before, so that was a different lane for me,” SahBabii detailed. “It was the perfect collab because I really like Japanese culture, so it was all good to do a song with an artist from Japan. I think what Spotify and POLLEN’s doing is great. It’s letting people listen to different genres of music. I listen to different genres of music. I listen to rap, I listen to reggae, I listen to all types of stuff, so I think it’s fire what they’re doing with it.”
