Nike Takes Inspiration From Classic Air Max Releases for 2020/21 Third Kits

Nike has revealed the third kits to be worn by a number of football clubs for the 2020/21 season, with Barcelona, Chelsea and more all wearing designs inspired by classic Nike Air Max releases. Announcing the project, Nike’s VP of Football Apparel Scott Munson, explained that, “he Air Max coupled with football jersey culture is the ultimate hybrid of streetwear and sports.”

For the Barcelona kit, Nike have celebrated the city and its vibrant beaches with a “Pink/Sea Green” colorway. As well as referencing the city, and some of the club’s previous kits, the colors also pay tribute to previous Air Max releases and a new FC Barcelona-inspired Air Max 90.

Cheslea’s third kit comes in a mix of “Ultramarine” and “Ember Glow” with touches of white. This colorway was chosen as a nod to a classic original Air Max 180 and also to bring to mind vintage football jerseys worn in the ’90s. Tottenham’s bright yellow kit is inspired by the Air Max 95 with a gradient design and thick yellow bars growing darker.

For Atletico Madrid, Nike has added a marble-effect graphic inspired by both the soles of the Air Max 90 and the Fountain of Neptune in Madrid, while Inter Milan will wear a black and silver kit inspired by the Air Max 97 “Silver Bullet.” Additionally, Roma’s third kit references the Air Max 90 “Safari” with touches of safari print, Galatasary’s kit is inspired by the “Sunset” colorway of the Air Max Plus and, finally, German club RB Leipzig’s kit features a swirling graphic in blue and white that brings to mind a classic Air Max 98 colorway.
