Facebook Launches Public Beta for Social VR Space Horizon
The future of virtual interactions.
Facebook has just launched a public beta for Horizon, a VR space for social interaction amid the current COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, Horizon’s beta demo can only be accessed on an invite-only basis.
Beyond interacting with others, the virtual world of Horizon allows users to build their own space and even create their own games. Facebook describes Horizon as “an ever-expanding universe of virtual experiences designed and built by the entire community,” meaning users will be able to enter the virtual realm with custom avatars and take part in activities within the space. According to sources, the VR space includes a feature where users can make their own 3D environments and another where they can participate in a live game show. It’s still unclear, however, whether the VR technology will arrive as a game, an app or a separate social networking service altogether.
The VR space is currently available on Oculus‘ Quest and Rift platforms in the U.S. and Canada.
