Aaron Sorkin is returning to the world of Facebook with The Social Reckoning, and a newly released trailer offers the fullest look yet ahead of the film’s October arrival. Written and directed by Sorkin and positioned as a companion piece to David Fincher‘s The Social Network, the drama lands roughly 16 years after that Best Picture nominee, trading the platform’s origin story for its reckoning.
The new trailer sets up the central standoff. It frames Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz as an investigative journalist circling a company and a founder he sees as playing an outsized role in modern life, before moving to a courtroom for a first look at Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. Strong steps into a role made iconic by Jesse Eisenberg in the original film, a recasting that signals how far the story has traveled from the dorm-room ambition of The Social Network to the legal and public reckoning at the center of this follow-up.
The story is drawn from real events. The film is inspired by the true story of Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer who enlists Horwitz to embark on a dangerous effort that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets. Those events fed the Journal‘s “The Facebook Files,” the exposé that laid out the company’s internal workings and the harms tied to them, and Sorkin builds his original screenplay around that reporting rather than the platform’s founding.
Mikey Madison plays Haugen and Jeremy Allen White plays Horwitz, with a supporting cast that includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr alongside Strong. Behind the camera, Sorkin produced with Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser, while Lauren Lohman, Roger McNamee, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Broderick Johnson, and Andrew A. Kosove serve as executive producers, positioning the drama as a marquee fall release.
