HBO Max‘s September 2026 programming slate leads with JAY-Z In 8, the eight-part HBO Original documentary series arriving September 18, and fills out the month with major premieres spanning originals, documentaries, and films. The lineup runs from a sizable first-of-the-month film refresh on September 1 through to the month-closing true-crime entry Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos on September 30.

JAY-Z In 8 anchors the month when it debuts September 18, with two new episodes rolling out weekly. Marking 30 years since his landmark debut album Reasonable Doubt, JAY-Z sits down with longtime friend and collaborator Rick Rubin for an intimate reflection on his career, revisiting the music together and unpacking his work and life through a shared listen. The series threads in many of his iconic tracks and album cuts, among them “99 Problems,” “Brooklyn’s Finest,” and “4:44,” building toward a revealing portrait of the artist and the influences that shaped him.

On the scripted side, the HBO Original comedy series Youth debuts September 20. The series follows a 50-year-old divorcee’s search for sex and love as she juggles caring for her ailing parents and parenting her should-be-grown son. Sharon Horgan stars in and writes the series, leading a cast that includes Sharlene Whyte, Rupert Friend, Aran Murphy, and Robbie Gee. Youth is produced by Merman, the studio behind Amandaland, Bad Sisters, and Vladimir.

The month’s documentary slate opens with A Killer Story on September 10, a three-part HBO Original released weekly. It examines a polarizing murder case that spanned more than two decades, centered on Dana Chandler, who was accused of killing her ex-husband and his girlfriend in 2002. Lacking forensic evidence, the case was litigated across three trials, and the series unspools a tangled account of family conflict, betrayal, prosecutorial misconduct, and confirmation bias while probing true-crime obsession and the dangers of blinkered certainty.

Two more documentaries round out the nonfiction lineup. Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie arrives September 22, following Hollywood veteran Marlee Matlin as she discovers the story of athlete Shelley Beattie, a fellow deaf woman whose life of adventure, fame, discrimination, and addiction mirrored her own. The Vermilion Films production frames the parallels between the two women as a portrait of strength and resilience. Then on September 29, Miller Night Football leads off a series of 2026 “NFL Shorts,” chronicling comedian Dennis Miller’s unlikely 2000 arrival in the Monday Night Football booth alongside Al Michaels and Dan Fouts, a cerebral-humor experiment met with both intrigue and skepticism.

Closing out the featured films, A24‘s Backrooms premieres September 25, in which a strange doorway in a furniture-showroom basement opens onto an endless network of interconnected rooms where time bends and something waits in the dark. Based on the series by Kane Parsons, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.
