Although the 2020 Amsterdam Marathon may have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 coronavirus, Mizuno is continuing its yearly tradition of tapping an artist to create a special shoe for the event — and 2020’s selection is Dutch typographer/artist Pieter Ceizer. Re-working both the heritage Sky Medal and the new Wave Skyrise, Ciezer’s duo of commemorative styles are inspired by summertime in Holland’s capital city.

A shoe originally designed to be worn on the medal stand after events, the Sky Medal is presented in a tan and white color scheme with cool orange and teal accents. Tongues and heels alike bring dark contrast with pops of black and special graphics, while pieces of the midsole are swathed in a speckled print. “I made 2 typographical mono-line designs which you can find on the back of the Sky Medal: ‘(2)020 Marathon’ and ‘Am Ster Dam’” says Ciezer. “The code of Amsterdam – 020 – is in the year (2)020 and ‘ster’ means ‘star’ as everyone who participates in a marathon gets their time to shine.”

Moving from lifestyle to modern-day performance, the Wave Skyrise features a synthetic white and black upper with striped details in various shades of blue and orange. Midsoles combine two types of foam, sandwiched around Mizuno’s signature Wave plate to provide familiar, responsive cushioning. Printed Runbird graphics and sturdy heel pieces round off the look.

“The colours I used for this collaboration represent The Vondelpark, the canals & the summer time in Amsterdam” mentions Ceizer. “The blue-ish green and soft mint symbolize nature; the park and the green canals, the yellow and orange stand for sunshine and the transition of summer to fall, when all that is green will turn orange and yellow. In the summer, you increase your running and enjoy the vibrancy of the city. In the fall you appreciate Nature’s changes and how peaceful the city of Amsterdam becomes.”

Pieter Ceizer’s Mizuno Sky Medal and Wave Skyrise are set to release on the Mizuno webstore and at select stockists come September 5. The Sky Medal is priced at €140 EUR (approximately $167 USD) and the Wave Skyrise arrives at €135 EUR (approximately $161 USD).
