Ubisoft Says PlayStation 5 Will Only Be Backward Compatible With PS4 Games

Ubisoft‘s new support page appears to confirm that only PlayStation 4 games will be compatible on the upcoming PlayStation 5. “Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games,” the support page says. Although Sony previously stated the PS5 will be compatible with that PS4, it did not confirm if the new console will be able to play titles from earlier consoles.

During a presentation in March, hardware designer Mark Cerny said that PS4 wouls titled would play ay a boosted frequency so those titles would reap the benefits of the console’s faster load time capabilities. In a subsequent blog post, Sony stated that “almost all” of its 100 top-played PS4 titles would be backward compatible at launch.

“We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5,” Sony later updated in the same blog post, further mudding the timeline for full backward compatibility. The same could be said about the upcoming Xbox Series X, as Microsoft announced “thousands of games” from all Xbox console libraries will work on the system at launch with no details expressly given.

Sony’s current PlayStation 4 isn’t compatible with previous PlayStation titles, and was the first console from the company without the capability, opting to utilize the PlayStation Now streaming service instead. Sony has yet to comment on how PlayStation Now will work on the upcoming system, but many speculate it will expand to include PS2 and PS1 titles in addition to the PS3 titles it offers currently.
