Charli XCX Captures Love in Lockdown With New "claws" Single
Her upcoming quarantine album ‘how i’m feeling now’ will drop May 15.
Charli XCX has dropped a new track, titled “claws,” off of her forthcoming album how i’m feeling now. Written, recorded and released in quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the album invites collaboration like never before: fans are welcome to give feedback on every aspect of the record, from contributing to videos, selecting singles and more. “claws” is the second single from the album, following her lovestruck “Forever” track.
Produced by Dylan Brady of 100 gecs, “claws” is a blend of hip hop, electronica, pop and trance, featuring unrelenting instrumentals. The track explores the feeling of being close to the one you love everyday — a situation many people have found themselves in recently. “Like your mind, like your smile/Like your eyes, I could die,” she sings. “Aeroplane, you are so fly/Singin’ songs by Jeremih.” The chorus sums up Charli XCX’s love in lockdown: “I like everything about you.”
“claws” captures this manic jubilation with “synths teetering on the edge of discordance, full bodied 808s and Charli’s innocent delivery juxtaposing and complimenting each other simultaneously before descending into a trance-infused euphoria,” as per a press release. Like her previous single release, Charli XCX has commissioned new artwork for the track with the help of three artists: Timothy Luke, Naked Cherry and Sara Cwynar.
