Today, Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the Met Gala, referred to as fashion’s biggest night out, will not take place this May. Set to be hosted by Meryl Streep and Nicolas Ghesquière, the highly-anticipated event will be postponed indefinitely as institutions and organizations continue to take precautionary measures amidst coronavirus fears.
The theme for the spring 2020 exhibition and coordinating Met Gala was “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” “Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, ‘About Time,’ and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled,” Anna Wintour wrote in her latest Vogue editor’s letter. “In the meantime, we will give you a preview of this extraordinary exhibition in our forthcoming May issue.” The news follows the museum’s announcement that it would close temporarily beginning March 13.
