Phony Ppl Enlist Megan Thee Stallion for New Single "Fkn Around"
The Brooklyn collective delivers a smooth new single featuring Houston’s rap queen.
Brooklyn’s own Phony Ppl have maneuvered through genre classifications for the better part of a decade now with members Elbee Thrie, Elijah Rawk, Matt “Maffyuu” Byas, Aja Grant and Bari Bass delivering diverse sounds inspired by R&B one moment and funk the next. The group even throws in rock, soul, hip-hop, jazz and occasional bossa nova inspirations for good measure, all of which were on display throughout the band’s sophomore album, mō’zā-ik via 300 Entertainment back in October 2018. Now over a year since their last major release, the team enlists Megan Thee Stallion for “Fkn Around” featuring additional production by Ivan Barias.
The smooth funk-leaning rendition was first previewed on Phony Ppl’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert performance and opens with Elbee Thrie’s vocals about the song’s protagonist “risking it all, just to get down.” Megan Thee Stallion is at her best here too, just days after releasing her latest performance on Yo Gotti’s “Pose” Remix music video featuring Lil Uzi Vert. She sums up the song’s theme best, “Don’t ask questions if we just sexing/ I got situations, no confirmations/ Everybody wants to know who Megan dating/ Well that depends on whatever the day is.”
