A24’s 'The Green Knight' Trailer Teases the Surreal Retelling of a Medieval Legend
A realistic adaptation of the ‘Gawain and the Green Knight’ poem.
The first trailer for A24 and director David Lowery‘s retelling of the 700-year-old Arthurian legend of Gawain and the Green Knight has arrived. The footage above begins with Gawain (Dev Patel) sitting on a throne under a spotlight as words of honor cryptically appear on-screen and his head combusts into flames as he holds onto a rod and crystal ball.
The video then cuts to Gawain in search of a way toward a path of glory. Encouraged by the king (Sean Harris) and queen (Kate Dickie), he wanders off in search of the fabled Green Knight along the countryside. However, the trail toward the knight is bleak and filled with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers. And the knight himself is a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. There are several mysteries about this film though, including the nature of Gawain’s fox companion, the gigantic hand seen coming from the horizon, and if Lowery’s adaptation will drift away from the poem and story it’s drawn from.
Alicia Vikander is listed as only Lady/Esel and Joel Edgerton as Lord on IMDB. However, many speculate that Vikander and Edgerton’s characters are Lady and Lord Bertilak, respectively. In the poem, both serve as lord and lady of the Green Knight’s castle, with Lady being involved with testing Sir Gawain’s honor.
The Green Knight arrives in theaters on May 29.
