A24’s Elden Ring movie is quickly becoming one of the studio’s most ambitious productions to date. According to Deadline, Alex Garland’s live-action adaptation is carrying a reported production budget of between $175 million and $200 million USD, with sources placing the figure closer to the upper end. The same report also states that the film is now in post-production and heading to November’s American Film Market, where A24 will present the project to international buyers.
Amazon MGM Studios has reportedly already secured pay-one streaming rights across a large number of international markets in a deal believed to be worth tens of millions of dollars, covering the film’s post-theatrical window rather than replacing its cinema release.
Much of the project nevertheless remains under unusually tight wraps. It’s reported that A24 has been sending representatives to supervise prospective buyers as they read Garland’s screenplay, while portions of the story are being withheld to prevent major plot details from leaking. The script is said to run at least 180 pages including visual material – a detail highlighted by IGN in its follow-up coverage – raising speculation that the finished film could approach three hours, although no official runtime has been announced.
What has been formally confirmed by A24 and Bandai Namco is Garland’s role as writer-director, the full ensemble cast – including Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz — and that the film is being made for IMAX. Based on FromSoftware’s 2022 action RPG, created under Hidetaka Miyazaki with mythology written by George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring is officially scheduled to open in theaters on March 3, 2028.
