Fishing Brand DAIWA Wades Into Fashion With PIER39 Sub-Label
The Japanese sportswear imprint is prepping garments both stylish and functional.

DAIWA is a fishing company operated by Japanese sport giant Globeride, best known in the West for its popular spinning fishing rod reels, though it also produces a selection of gear including lures (approved by BAPE), rods and apparel. For Spring/Summer 2020, the garment arm of the company is expanding by way of a fashion-forward venture dubbed PIER39, imbuing cutting-edge outdoor gear with contemporary style.
Military inspiration comes by way of repurposed silhouettes, including fishtail parkas and M-65 jackets, and a versatile earthy color palette. Fishing garments provide further design cues, with shirts, vests and pants all rife with plentiful deep cargo pockets and sturdy fabrics. These include tear-resistant and wrinkle-free polyester and stretchy nylon, the latter of which is occasionally lined with GORE-TEX Infinium or breathable mesh. Slouchy silhouettes complement the breathable textiles, with the baggy shirts, tees, shorts and pants all executed in generous proportions.
