Penny Hardaway‘s Nike Air Penny 3 is set to return in an “Eggplant” colorway. A homage to the iconic Air Foamposite One “Eggplant,” this purple-toned take on a Nike Basketball classic originally arrived to market in 2010 — and this drop marks its first ever re-release.
To achieve peak “Eggplant” style, this Air Penny 3 uses shimmering purple on its abstract-shaped Foamposite overlays, which cover a large chunk of the lateral forefoot before rising up onto the collar. Below this beetle shell-inspired assemblage sits a luxurious white leather base. Black trim, tabs and tongues provide dark contrast.
Branding is mostly kept to a minimum, with small white embroidered Swooshes and a purple Nike One Cent badge sitting on the lateral quarter. The midsole’s heel is made up of lined purple EVA foam, and sits above a clear Air Max cushioning unit — which works with a forefoot Zoom unit to provide a combination of responsiveness and impact protection. Black and purple outsoles with a wavy traction pattern round off the look.
The Air Penny 3 debuted in 1997, and even though it’s been retroed the least of Penny’s signature models, its legacy carries on today. Interested parties will be able to purchase the “Eggplant” when it releases on the Nike webstore for $155 USD later in November. Previously, an October 22 drop date had been reported.
