Up Close With Virgil Abloh's Louis Vuitton FW20 Collection
A detailed look at the new garments, accessories and sneakers.
After taking Paris by storm with Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 2020 menswear collection — and artistic director Virgil Abloh almost stole the show with new Off-White™ x Nike sneakers — we have a closer look at the dreamlike “Heaven on Earth” presentation. Offering lush blues, rugged browns and sparkly accents, the range delivers an assortment of statement pieces rooted in the luxury house’s familiar codes.
Opulent layering pieces grace the dramatically-posed mannequins that occupy the showroom, including suiting dusted with glitter and emblazoned with cloud-and-sky imagery, tying into the collection’s theme. A similar blue and white palette informs a complete capsule of items, from sneakers and bags to bomber jackets and slacks. Ruffled garments, lacey cut-outs and knit beanies lend a slight air of femininity to the menswear range, taken to the extreme with aggressively draped coats that boast asymmetric hemlines and glittery shirts.
Chunky sunglasses, crocodile leather belts and various monogram-laden iterations of a new sneaker silhouette appear throughout the range, complemented by hefty derbies elevated by removable straps (embellished with monograms or opulent fur to drive home the collection’s cloud motif) and plenty of rainbow-tinged jewelry. Timeless Louis Vuitton Trunks are finished with a resplendent mirror shine, even embedded with functional speakers to help get the party started. The congenial vibes continue thanks to a monogram-rich camping set, complete with folding chairs, lantern and metal thermos — these items feel particularly like an extension of the outdoorsy attitude put forth by Spring/Summer 2020.
Much love was shown to Abloh by way of Parisian street style, which saw attendees stunting plentiful Louis Vuitton and Off-White™.
