Helmut Lang SS20 Modernizes Imprint's Minimalistic Legacy
Immaculate tailoring and monochromatic palettes dominate.

Returning from its Fall/Winter 2019 runway collection that debuted earlier this February, Helmut Lang has just showcased its latest Spring/Summer 2020 collection at New York Fashion Week. Marking the second season with Mark Thomas (creative director of menswear and womenswear) and Thomas Cawson (creative director of Helmut Lang jeans), the new men’s and women’s collection channels much of the same tendencies they showcased last season. The two manage to hone in on Helmut Lang’s classic style from the ‘90s, bringing forth impeccable tailoring, well-coordinated color palettes, innovative outerwear, denim, and more. It seems both Thomas and Dawson have reshaped Lang’s long-standing “golden era” with an immaculately modern take.
White-on-white, beige-on-beige, olive-on-olive and more palettes dominate the mainly monochromatic collection, whereby various Lang staples from well-tailored Crombie and Lab coats in various lightweight materials to translucent trousers and tops exceed in revisiting some of the brand’s most iconic designs. As is expected, denim hasn’t been left out either — with Cawson debuting a variety of innovative takes on the brand’s staples. Overall, Helmut Lang’s latest collection exceeds at redefining the imprint’s minimalistic edge, whereby Thomas and Cawson aptly update Lang’s core aesthetics to sate fans of the brand’s heritage.
